People’s literacy skills as adults are largely determined in their early years. Yet 29% of kindergarten aged children in Alberta are experiencing great difficulty in one or more of the areas of development essential for learning! (this is a higher proportion than the Canadian norm of 25.4%) It is estimated that by the end of Grade 6, at least 30 % of Canadian children cannot read or write well enough to succeed in school.
Based on these numbers approximately 23,100 Calgarian children between the ages of 0 and 4 suffer from low literacy skills.
Investing in early childhood literacy today will build tomorrow’s workforce. It is the perfect way to start your corporate citizenship program. A TD Canada Economics Special Report estimates there will be a return of roughly $1.5 to almost $3, for every dollar invested in early childhood literacy.
Calgary requires a well-educated, literate workforce to grow our economy of the future. So this small business week the Give To Grow campaign is encouraging Calgary small businesses to get involved by donating or fundraising to support childhood literacy.
Together, we will raise awareness and financial support to invest in our future through early childhood literacy programs which contributes to building the literate workforce needs of tomorrow.
